3d abstracts - mixed media
Creating small works of art is nothing new, Paul Klee was quite the master. Thankfully, more than 17,000 gems came up out of his creative genius. Working small (Small Is Beautiful) presents its unique challenges. Andrew Hemingway has met this challenge over the last decade, developing an oeuvre of what he describes as 3D abstracts from which he has also explored his long-held ambition to make tapestries.
The paintings, in mixed media explore the abstractions of space (not outer space!). This encounter is explored through the colour planes by glazing, a technique learned through Titian. Hemingway considers these works to have been some of the most time consuming he has ever made. Much more challenging than his figurative works. He cites Gerhard Richter who seems to suggest the same in his own creative journey. The complexity of these abstract paintings is plain for the viewer in the initial encounter, but more profoundly so when given time to digest the story. For sheer beauty he thinks that nothing can quite compare in his oeuvre to this body of work, providing the base for his ongoing tapestries.
